Vive le Tour de Lesotho!

17/05/10

Phetetso Monese from Maputsoe is the new ‘King Of The Mountains’ after clinching the Tour de Lesotho Cycle Race title last weekend.  Lesotho Cycling Association Vice President, Tumisang Taabe, finished an impressive second after working tirelessly in the preparations for the race.

This prestigious race has not taken place since 2006, but on Sunday 16/05/10 Lesotho Cycling Association embarked on Phase I of it’s plan to reinstate the Tour de Lesotho as Africa’s toughest cycling race.

Phase I was an initiative to ‘get the ball rolling’ using resources at hand, before escalating efforts to higher levels in future Phases II-IV.  The full proposal for Phases I - IV is available for download here.

Sunday’s race was competed between Lesotho’s own riders with over 40 cyclists starting the race.  The Elite race was staged over 86km of gruelling mountain passes from Maseru to Mohale, whereas a shorter distance of 58km, ending in Setibing, was available for mountain bike and less experienced riders.

Lesotho Cycling acknowledges the generous input of various sponsors and partners, without whom this race could not have taken place.  These include: - Rumdel Construction, Paragon Business Solutions, Letseng Diamonds, Mr Jeans, Lesotho Sports & Recreation Commission, Lesotho Traffic Police, Lesotho Television as well as volunteers from Lesotho Off-Road Racing.  We also acknowledge the impact of Lesotho Sun Hotel and Andries Bester as the visionaries of the original event.

The winning time was an impressive 3:17:58 (h:m:s), although the time set by Tekenyane Moubane of  2:59:59 in 2005 still stands as the record for a Lesotho cyclist.  [I believe that the overall record is held by South Africa Pro cyclist Nic White with a time of 2:36:45 in 2004].

Phase II is planned as a bigger event later on this year, where we will invite club riders from South Africa to join with our local riders as a curtain-raiser to a major race in 2011.
