Queen’s Baton Relay through Lesotho

Lesotho Cycling played an integral role in the relay of the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton through Lesotho.

The baton was first handed over to us by Moses Kopo, the silver-medalist boxer from the Melbourne Games, who had just descended the historical mountain, Thaba Bosiu. The baton was then received by Sehaole Mpopo and handed from rider to rider until it was fastened to the front of Poloko Makara’s bike for the 20km trip into the capital, Maseru.

Cycling also handled a second leg, late into the evening, where we received the baton from Lesotho Taekwondo Association before ascending the steep climb to the top of the new Parliament Hill. We were now accompanied by a long procession of dignitaries and well-wishers. At the top we paused for a few photographs, and descended to hand over the Baton to veteran athlete, Kenneth Hlasa.
