Promising Pace For Phetetso At Potch

Mark West

06/09/2010

Lesotho cyclist, Phetetso Monese, is one of 15 aspiring young African cyclists currently enrolled in the International Cycling Union (UCI) training camp in Potchefstroom, RSA.

He arrived at the African Continental Cycling Centre on 01 September and will stay there until November in preparation for African Cycling Championships in Rwanda.

In his first major race, Phetetso showed a promising start by finishing 39th position in the Dome-To-Dome Spectacular in Gauteng.  His time for the 90km race was 2h 14m, which equates to an average of 41kmh, almost 10kmh faster than he is used to riding in Lesotho.

Monese comfortably won the 100km road race category at Lesotho National Cycling Championship in Maseru last month in a time of 3h06m with an average speed of 32kmh.

The UCI training camp is directed by Mr. J-P van Zyl, a former world silver medallist in cycling.  Under his guidance, we can be sure that Phetetso will grow from strength to strength and be at his best for the African Championships, which will double as a qualifying event for 2012 Olympic Games.  Phetetso is desperately looking for sponsors to help him raise the M25,000 he needs to complete the camp and travel to Rwanda.

The athletes involved in this training camp are representing Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Seychelles, Gabon, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia and Lesotho.
