Nic White’s Big Sky Ride

This year’s ride encountered snow, which is highly irregular in November, supposedly summer!!!

I was privileged to meet up with the team near the end and enjoyed the experience. Thank you Nic for promoting the uniqueness of Lesotho as an adventure cycling destination!

Read about the extra-ordinary 2009 ‘White’ Sky Ride in his own words www.nicwhite.co.za

Nic White is one of South Africa’s top cyclists. His team, Medscheme, have won numerous races and accolades this year in their first year of competition including team legend Malcolm Lange passing 300 career victories and new-boy Arran Brown clinching the South African Alpha Pharm Series title for most consistent performance throughout the season. Both these riders will attribute a great deal to the work that Nic puts in to every one of those wins.

Apart from the team effort Nic puts in every week, he is an accomplished rider in his own right, most notably securing both the UCI African Championship and the UCI African Tour titles in 2007/8 season. He is also a past winner of our own beloved Tour de Lesotho race.

Every year, Nic organises a ‘fun’ tour along southern Africa’s highest roads.

The word ‘fun’ is used to emphasize that this is not a race but a relaxed journey through some of Lesotho’s toughest cycling terrain, and I am sure that riders will feel like substituting other words during each day’s challenges. The funny thing about cyclists is that at the end of the day, it is those punishments that bring the fondest memories, and it is kind-of fun.

The ride started near the border town of Underberg on Thurs 19 Nov 2009 and continued through to Butha-Buthe on Sun 22 Nov 2009.

We welcome Nic and his adventurers to Lesotho and wish them Tsela Tsoeu! (literally white-road/ safe trip)
